The perception that people have about Indian food is mostly incorrect. Indian food is not spicy, its flavorful, aromatic, rich and hearty, provided it is cooked in the right way. One such discussion was going on with my Italian boss who had never tried Indian food and he kept repeating that he will not be able to handle the spices and the chilies. To change his perception I invited him and few of other colleagues for lunch at Chutney’s Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Bur Dubai. Been here previously but that was long back and I was hoping that the quality of food and service hasn’t changed.
An hour before the lunchtime, I called to check if they have reservations open for five. Luckily they were able to accommodate my request at such a short notice.
The restaurant overlooks the lobby and up the gorgeous staircase which is situated in the center. In the foyer you will notice framed cartoons. Wish they had added a story to it, looked interesting anyway. The decor is beautiful, they have used glass chandeliers, wooden panels/flooring & rich choice of fabrics for the curtains. The center stage has a stunning backdrop of a royal member riding an elephant.
Dining at Chutneys was a different experience all together, they serve their food in silverware which was heavy. how more royal could it be? To be honest, when I first saw the thali and the quantity of the curries served, I though it was a bit less for the price paid. For the Royal Thali, you can have unlimited softdrinks/water and accompaniments but the curries are served just once. The food looked so inviting that ignoring all the quantity related worries, I set to taste the dishes. I had opted for vegetarian thali while the rest had opted for the non vegetarian one. There were four curries of which the Dal Makhani and the paneer butter masala were outstanding. I am not a fan of dal makhni but this one was just fantastic! The food was not spicy but it had this beautiful aroma due to the careful selection of ingredients. The yogurt dip/ Raita was flavored with cumin and just perfect to cool down the palate. The accompaniments were naan breads and rice. The rice were cooked in clarified butter and I could taste that well throughout and were served piping hot. The naan breads were light, delicate and delicious.The non vegetarian thali consisted of a Murg Makhi (chicken) and rest of three curries that were in the vegetarian thali as well. There was a lot of praise for the Murg Makhni dish and it was simply delicious. My boss and colleagues were completely comfortable having dishes and no one was complaining about the food being too hot or spicy as they had assumed earlier. My only disappointment was the dessert.. which was Gulab Jamun. Gulab jamun is a sweet dumpling made with frying milk solids and various nuts. It was nice and warm but I would have loved something innovative instead like a gulab jamun ice cream or a rabri or a sorbet to freshen up. Also if they would cut down on one curry in the royal thali and add a starter instead like some kababs, that would be great.
Overall experience was really good. The food is fantastic, service was a bit slow at the beginning but once the thalis were out the servers were attending to every need. Our host, a beautiful lady whose name I failed to recall even helped us click some lovely pictures. The food, at first I was worried about the quantity but as soon as I started consuming, I realized that it was too much and I couldn’t finish the dishes.
I would have loved if there were some ghazal singers available during lunch service that would have added more value to the experience. Will definitely visit next time to try their A la Carte menu, I really liked the place and the courteous staff made our experience worth.
